Proposals for the Reform of Legal Aid in England and Wales
This consultation paper, published in 2010, proposes reforms to the legal aid scheme, many of which were enacted by the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012.
This submission provides the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) with information for its follow-up procedure on the 2013 concluding observation to the United Kingdom (UK) on legal aid and access to justice. The submission focuses on the impact of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO Act) and other reforms in England and Wales, and the impact of employment tribunal fees in Great Britain. This report was updated in March 2016 after submission to the CEDAW Committee due to a significant Court of Appeal decision affecting legal aid for survivors of domestic violence.
